Louise Farrenc was a pioneering French composer, pianist and teacher whose music combines Classical clarity with the expressive richness of the Romantic era. A gifted pianist from an early age, she studied composition in Paris and became one of the leading female musicians of nineteenth-century France. Farrenc was appointed professor of piano at the Paris Conservatoire, where she taught for more than 30 years. Her compositions include three symphonies, chamber music, piano works and a number of works for orchestra, many of which were highly praised during her lifetime. Although her music later fell into obscurity, Farrenc’s works have enjoyed a significant revival in recent decades, establishing her as an important voice in nineteenth-century French music.
